Confirm the rental terms with the insurer and the rental agreement with the rental company before relying on a booking.
Start with a coverage conversation
Before reserving a vehicle, ask the insurer which rental arrangement, if any, applies to the claim. Write down the answer and request the relevant written information. Tell the representative when you expect to need transportation and ask whether another review or confirmation is needed before booking.
A shop appointment and a rental reservation are two different arrangements. Confirm each one with the party handling it. If your repair plan is still being assessed, say so when discussing the rental rather than treating an early estimate of timing as a guaranteed return date.
CDI describes rental reimbursement as coverage with a daily expense amount and a maximum limit. Check your own policy and claim response for the terms that apply.California Department of Insurance: Automobile Insurance Terms
Ask before accepting the reservation
Keep the insurer's response alongside the rental company's quote. Compare the actual proposed charges with the terms you were given, and ask the appropriate party to explain any difference. If an answer is not yet available, leave that line marked as an open question.
- Is a rental benefit or other payment arrangement confirmed for this claim?
- What daily amount, total limit, dates and vehicle category have been confirmed?
- Who pays the rental company, and is a deposit or payment card required from me?
- How are taxes, fees, fuel, optional products and upgrades addressed in this reservation?
- Who can approve an extension, and how should I request it?
- What are the return location, return time and after-hours instructions?
Handle changes before the rental deadline
If the repair schedule changes, ask the shop for the current vehicle status and the next meaningful milestone. Share that update with the contact handling the rental and ask for a written decision about any requested extension. Keep the rental company's return instructions in view while the question is being reviewed.
Do not assume a repair update also changed the rental reservation. Confirm who has notified the rental company, what dates are now recorded and whether any charge is expected from you. A short calendar reminder before the current return deadline can help you ask while there is time to receive an answer.
Keep the return and final bill together
When collection of your repaired vehicle is arranged, separately confirm how you will return the rental. Ask whether a different return location or time changes the charges. Save the return acknowledgement and final rental bill with the earlier reservation and extension records.
If you find an unexpected charge, identify it by date and description and ask the rental company to explain it. Direct the coverage question to the insurer with the relevant bill attached. First Choice does not advertise a guaranteed rental benefit or complimentary rental vehicle on this page; contact the shop to discuss the repair schedule and your transportation plan.
Questions about this step
Is a rental automatically included with a repair appointment?
Confirm transportation arrangements separately. Ask your insurer about the claim's rental terms and the rental company about the reservation. The repair appointment alone does not establish a rental booking.
What should I do if repairs take longer than the rental booking?
Ask the shop for the current status, then contact the person handling rental payment or authorization before the scheduled return. Request a written extension decision and confirm the reservation directly with the rental company.
